Gigi’s Playground

Gigi’s Playground Legacy

Gigi’s Playground is named in loving memory of special education teacher Guillermina “Gigi” Spies. For nine years, Gigi dedicated her heart and talents to The Center for Autism Education (CAE). She cared deeply for every student and staff member. In addition, she encouraged others daily and reminded them to always do their best. Her compassion and energy made her a true role model within the CAE community.

Gigi’s passion for her work showed in everything she did. She believed in the potential of every learner. Moreover, she always highlighted their strengths and inspired others with her kindness, patience, and determination. Because of her approach, students and staff felt valued and supported. Her influence continues to shape CAE long after her passing.

To honor her legacy, CAE created a new sensory-friendly playground. This space provides a safe and welcoming place for students to play, grow, and thrive. In addition, the design supports children with autism and other developmental disabilities. The equipment encourages exploration, movement, and calming experiences. As a result, students can build confidence, practice social skills, and discover joy in learning through play.

Ultimately, this playground does more than provide recreation. It carries forward Gigi’s legacy of love and encouragement. It reflects her belief that every child deserves a safe place to be supported and celebrated. Most importantly, it stands as a reminder to see the best in others, push one another to succeed, and always love with the same warmth that Gigi gave so freely.
